RICHMOND — Robb Administration budget officials committed a $17 million mistake when putting together state revenue estimates, an official said.
“We just made a significant error in our projections,” Secretary of Education Donald J. Finley told Virginia legislators on Thursday.
Finley, who was assistant secretary of finance when the error was made last year, said it was his fault. He said he miscalculated how much money the state would take in through its unclaimed property program.
The result of the error is that the state has about $5 million less than expected to lend to localities for school construction, Finley said.
Budget officials revising 1984-86 revenue estimates said the unclaimed property program would bring in an additional $24 million.
But by the end of the current fiscal year, the state had taken in about $7 million, Finley said.
Finley said the state may eventually collect all the additional money, but not in time to help the current budget.
Group wants inquiry
RICHMOND — A public interest lobby said Friday it has asked the House ethics committee to determine if Rep. ,W.C. “Dan” Daniel, D-5th, violated House rules by accepting free airplane rides from a defense contractor.
“These allegations are serious,” said March Frosh, a lobbyist with Common Cause, a group that lobbies for open government. “The idea is we would like the committee to investigate whether the rules have been violated and to report those findings.”
