Camp is a word generally associated with swimming, hiking and most of all, summer.
On March 22-24, however, 10 children and two teens from Rappahannock attended 4-H Cloverbud Camp held at the Northern Virginia 4-H Educational center. This year’s theme was science, and the campers participated in activities such as making worm colonies, making paper and regular camp rituals like songs and campfires.
“My favorite was the worms,” said camper Devin Day. The worm colony activity* enabled them to make homes for two worms which they were then allowed to take home.
“I named mine Dolly and George!” exclaimed Brittany Lee, another camper. That wasn’t what Brittany enjoyed most though. “My favorite part was making name tags because you could decorate,” she explained. Before the name tags could be decorated though the children made the paper for them.
To do this campers used a blender, water, com starch, food coloring and paper which had been previously written on. They put all the ingredients in the blender and mixed them until the gloop was the corret consistency to put in a pan. At this point they squeezed water out of the mixture and ironed it.
