was that far back then.”
We followed my father’s lead. He having grown up up there knew the way better than the rest of us. Certainly better than three of us who had never been there. We began by finding the chimneys of..the Houghton-Pullert place. Still standing vigilant centennials of the past, but showing signs of the presence of time. We listened as Dad told a couple of childhood stories from his still vivid memory. Then mustering our courage we made our way toward the Beahm place. Having to stop frequently for »my elder counterparts to catch their breaths and reassure themselves they could do this. At forty-three, I was the youngest in the party, the other’s ages ranging from sixty to seventy years.
We made it to the Beahm place in good time, I think. Got a drink from the spring which still runs. Took pictures of the chimneys where the house once stood, then found the cemetery, which is in good repair.
All the stones were standing save ohe, that of Mrs. Nancy Beahm. We counted ten graves. There are four inscribed stones. We knew the names of three others buried there but that still left us with three names we could not come up with. Perhaps some kind reader will know and inform one of us.
We left this place with the joy of knowing we’d be going down hill. There were comments to the effect that some of the party would not be coming back her any more, kind of sad but realistic. I hope at sixty or seventy I can still do it too.
