Aitcheson fashioned the first “flak jacket” body protector for the jockey community. “1 had played football in school, and in the Laurel league, so I had those pads,” he said. “Once I started breaking my collarbones [repeatedly] 1 put those pads on, and they helped cushion the falls.”
Though he never was again leading rider, Aitcheson continued partnering the decade’s best jumpers. Alfred Smith’s:Tuscalee, trained by the senior Aitcheson, won 37 jump races, the most ever of any steeplechaser. Aitcheson also rode Chapel Street, Soothsayer, Annual Meeting, King of Spades and Happy Intellectual to win major stakes. Happy Intellectual was his last stakes winner, taking the 1977 Turf Writers
