“This acreage ought to be a beautiful park. There is a lovely waterfall, quiet woods and a gorgeous view,” says Mr. Harris. “Instead it is the most unsightly trash dump I’ve seen outside of an urban area.”
In recognition of the site’s importance as the headwaters for the Rappahannock River watershed, 20 members of the Fredericksburg group Friends of the Rappahannock will be coming to Chester Gap to help with the cleanup.
Mr. Harris asks volunteers to leave their vehicles at the Chester Gap Fire Hall off routes 660 and 670 and to walk or take the sheriff’s van to the cleanup site.
The cleanup is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 6 p,m., with volunteers welcome to donate an hour or two at any time during the day. Lunch, coordinated by Maybelle Gilkey, will be served at the Fire Hall.
Mr. Harris says that the dump site is steep and treacherous and recommends that no children be permitted to come. He suggests that volunteers wear sturdy footwear, heavy work gloves, long-sleeved shirts and durable pants. Large buckets with handles should be brought for hauling small trash out, if volunteers have such buckets on hand.
