St. Clair had galloped racer horses as a girl on Cleeve Hill, high above the championship Cheltenham racecourse in the Cotswolds. She attended formal arts schools in both Cheltenham and Birmingham. When she and her family moved to Vermont, she decided to put aside her love of the open ocean and concentrate on her original loves of horses and art
She began a breeding operation, basing her program on foundation stallion Portrait Painter, from the nick of Native Dancer and Princequillo. “Quite often the person who knew me as a [horsewoman] had no idea that 1 painted, and the person who knew that I painted know that 1 rode a little bit, but didn’t know that I ran a breeding farm and... competed,” she told an Equine Images reporter.
