Plants receive a great deal of professional care before they reach local garden centers. The way these plants have been developed and cultivated varies. Many plants go through complex care before they get to the nursery. For example, ornamental trees are three to four years old before they are marketed.
In the first year, the trees are planted in rows and staked. This is followed by three or four years of weeding, irrigation, pest management, regular fertilizing, pruning, and inspection for disease and insects. After the trees have gone through this process at the growers, they are harvested and shipped to garden centers. Garden centers often mulch trees to increase their ability to withstand winter temperatures and winds as most trees are sold the spring.
Rhododendrons Need Five
Years To Grow
Shrubs also go through a long, complex process before they reach the garden center. For example, it takes five years for a rhododendron to grow from a cutting into a marketable plant for a garden center. First, the grower takes a cutting and places it in a propagation house for five to six months. Rooting takes place in the propagation house, where temperatures and relative humidity are carefully monitored.
