Since Saluter won his 1996 debut at the Marlborough Point-toPoint, he would seem an odds-on choice to replicate his Great Meadow form this term. However, the invincible became the runnerup in the April 13 My Lady’s Manor, losing a fair-and-square stretch battle to rival Southwoods. That victory seems to have done Southwoods in for the year: he is reported to have an injury that will keep him out for the remainder of the spring at least.
So Saluter is without his main ’96 competition, and his 1995 rival, Buck Jakes, was not prenominated to the Gold Cup; instead that Maryland-based horse was slated to run in the April 27 Maryland Hunt Cup. He may supplemental^ nominate to the Gold Cup when entries to the race are made, at an extra cost, however, no horse since the great Billy Barton in 1926 has won the Hunt Cup and Gold Cup in the same year, indeed few have tried.
