competing. A maiden winner last year at Foxfield, he won a pointto-point tune-up this year and finished third at My Lady’s Manor. Though Kentucky-bred, Paper Hat is Fauquier owned- and trained and will be a hometown favorite to cheer.
Edge Hill Squire is another local hero to carry the crowd support. Trained in Middleburg by young Gus Brown, the Kentuckybred gelding dead heated for a win at Morven Park last year and has been consistent in his point-topoint warm-ups in ‘96. Nominees are rounded out by French invader Tarsky, owned by Irv Naylor and trained by the ever-present Jack Fisher. Fourth in this year’s Grand National (of the same name but not the same race as either the English Grand National — held in Liverpool run over brush — or American Grand National — now at Far Hills over hurdles — Tarsky’s Grand National is over timber at Butler, Md.), Tarsky won the National last year and should be tough in the Gold Cup.
Nominations for the timber classic were taken on April 22. Supplemental nominations, at an added cost of $250, plus $175 if not scratched by May 1 and $200 additional to start, may be made at time of entries on April 29. Though this is not a complete list of starters, the actual runners for the Gold Cup typically are similar if not identical to the nomination list available at press time.
