He said there has been a reduction in discipline problems in the past few years because the school system has “folks in a position of responsibility who want to work with children who have problems....We’re a very diverse community. The schools can be a positive unifying force.”
Aileen Johnson supported the budget citing two teachers and two teachers' aides who have had a big impact for the good on children. “I know there are many as dedicated as they....We can go into the 21st century for Rappahannock’s most priceless treasures, and believe me, it’s not our land, it’s our children.”
Lee Bird spoke of working in the adult literacy program. He said he knows first hand how difficult it is for those who are adults with adult responsibilities for jobs and family members to make up for education lost when they dropped out of high school. “It’s better to see them through when they’re young and. don’t have the accumulation of responsibilities.”
Former School Board Chairman Beverly Massie said, “We don’t have a perfect society, and we don’t have perfect schools. We have many fine teachers.” She said many of them and other school system employees are people who grew up in Rappahannock and decided to return to the community and work in the schools. “That means a strong community,” she said..
