S.L. Smith, Brankman is a 6-yearold son of Woodman but of the Hold Your Peace mare The Branks. The handsome steel gray gelding won three times over timber last year, but has yet to replicate that form this season. He finished up the track at Glenwood Park April 20, but owner Augustin Stables every year sends out the best of the best (including Southwoods) and Brankman wouldn’t have been nominated unjess he was expected to improve off his ’96 debut.
The 1^91 National Steeplechase Association champion timber runner, Gus’s Boy was bred in Virginia by David B. Lily. The Commonwealth colorbearer has been inordinately consistent over timber throughout his sixyear jump racing career, including multiple victories in three of his six seasons. His best year, 1991, featured scores at the Virginia Gold Cup in the apprentice timber, Hardscuffle, Genessee Valley, Montpelier and St. James.
The Maryland breeding program has four state representatives among Gold Cup nominees. Leading that charge has to be James Simpler’s Navy Pilot, bred by well-known horseman Sidney Watters. The dark bay gelding was
