Lottery Game
U nprecedented
The Virginia Lottery and the Virginia Gold Cup will make history May 4 when the lottery will use the results of a horse race to determine its winners.
It will be the first lottery game conducted on a steeplechase race in the United States.
The $1 game will be sold through the Lottery Board’s more than 3,000 retail outlets up until 10 minutes prior to post time for the first lottery race. Players attempt to correctly choose five numbers — tied to the winner of one race and the first two finishers in two others — to collect the prize.
“This is a very large step forwarder steeplechase racing,” said Virginia Gold Cup chairman Arthur W. Arundel. “providing immense new public exposure to the steeplechasing game and support our charitable beneficiaries.”
Prizes will vary depending on the number of tickets sold statewide. The Virginia Lottery estimates that the top prize could be worth $75,000 or more.
Runners in three races will be randomly assigned a number, one through 35. The finishing order of those three races will then determine the lottery winner. Tickets will be sold at the course on race day.
