Though this year’s ’Chase at the Gold Cup meet will not offer a purse, the race was designed to encourage a new category of owner-rider who might in the future contest a loosely- or directly-connected series of similar events around the state and eastern U.S.
Paddock time for the Foxhunters’ runners is set for noon. Post time is 12:15 p.m.
The NationsCup, a sanctioned race which has a 3:13 p.m. post time, is set at three miles over the same course as the Mellon race. Both races over the Arundel course follow a route which is meant to closely equate the challenging natural obstacles found on a typical day’s foxhunting.
Jumps include brush, national hurdles, timber fences, a fallen tree, chicken coops, a stream ditch jump, a sod-topped stone wall and a 9 inch deep 170 foot long stream bed crossing through which horses in both races will splash mid-race.
Last spring’s Gold Cup marked the inaugural running of a race on the Arundel course. The spring ’chase was won by Chirkpar, professional Sean Clancy riding, with Kinross Farm’s Mihmaz and amateur rider (though professional trainer) Neil
