Internationally acclaimed equine and landscape artist Heather St.Clair Davis is the official artist for the 71st running of the Virginia Gold Cup, sponsored by BMW and Land Rover.
Davis’ Gold Cup work represents the field of runners galloping through the Swan Lake Splash during the natural steeplechase’s inaugural running in 1995. Davis captures the intense movement of horses, riders and water in addition to the large race-day crowd in the background of the softly-colored impressionistic painting. “There is a moment of perfect balance that is good for a statue. But for painting, you want to tip a horse just off balance, take him past the moment of perfect balance, so you imply the movement,” Davis says. “You don’t want him static.”
