The Paul Mellon ’Chase was designed to encourage more grassroots support for steeplechasing — by limiting participation in the Mellon race to amateur riders that have not won any sanctioned races, the event should attract new talent which may then go on to become involved in tlic steeplechasing sport further.

Visitors to The Plains on the first Saturday in May will be exposed to the best the steeplechasing sport has to offer.
