Baumgardners plan to visit Myriam and her family in France before too long.
They plan to continue the foreign exchange student tradition and will probably host a boy next time, once their son Alex is a junior or senior (he is now 14). Mr. Baumgardner imagines their next student as a boy who \frill excel in basketball and baseball.
Santiago Mosquera from Popayan, Colombia, has been living with Peter and Sharon Luke (both attorneys at Luke and Genebach, Ltd. in Washington) and their two children, Ben and Christina in the F.T. Valley.
He arrived last August 16 and the Lukes were asked by Jeanie McNear of YFU to take care of him for six weeks, as he hadn’t yet been placed in a home. After they got to know Santiago, said Mrs. Luke, she and her husband decided it would be a shame to have him go anywhere else. She said that their 11 year-old daughter Christina was especially excited to have an exchange student staying in their home, and their 8 year-old son Ben has really enjoyed having him too. “Ben is having a lot of fun with him,” said Mrs. Luke.
Santiago and Mr. Luke are both avid bicyclists; Santiago is a national bike champion in Colombia and rides in races here as a “junior expert.” Last fall he participated in two mountain bike races, and often rides from 30 to 35 miles a day. On May 18 he, Mr. Luke and Ben will be participating in a bike tour in Madison. He is looking for a mountain bike to purchase and take back to Colombia with him as the choices there are limited.
Santiago has been very good company, said Mr. Luke, and Mrs. Luke added that it has been like having another adult in the house. He has been helpful by mowing the grass and he does his own laundry.
