To the Editor:
First, let me express my great admiration for School Superintendent Dr. Gangel. He has a difficult task as he strives to give our children the best education possible. I recognize the fact he was just trying to secure needed funds for the school.
I commend School Board Member Ron Makela for the many ways he and wife Jan support our community. (As a matter of fact, I’m wearing my “Amissville 22002” t-shirt at the health seminar today which shows “Hackley’s Store” in smaller print.) I consider them good friends and neighbors. I happen to disagree on this issue.
I regret I was made out to be a liar in your comments in the April 17 s issue. When you said “It seems odd that those who oppose using the “iffy” federal Goals 2000 funds. . . prefer to have the state relying on the even more “iffy” revenues from Powerball” is wrong; I oppose the lottery; I believe many who can least afford it waste money on the lottery instead of using it for their family. Gambling is a disease to some. I’m sorry you feel the debate “is much ado about practically nothing.”
You also said “Mr. Makela said he was well aware of the controversy over Goals 2000.” I’m glad he remembered. When I spoke to him on Saturday, April 13, he said he did not realize it was controversial until after the fact. To which I responded, “You mean neither Ron Frazier nor Rick Wood has discussed this with you?” I knew personally they had concerns about the program. I have been aware of the controversy for several years now and have been trying to follow it. If it was known it was controversial, all the more reason to give citizens an opportunity to view the program.
When I return 1 hope to review this latest version of Goals 2000; if there are indeed no federal strings attached now, 1 will be the first to express my apology,
Dr. Gangel’s letter to me of April 19 states in part, “If the money were applied equally, the figure of $6,000 has been discussed for Rappahannock County.”
The Culpeper Star Exponent issue of April 18 published an article by the Associated Press that lawmakers did not override Gov. Allen’s veto of Virginia’s participation in Goals 2000 when they met last Wednesday, April 17. It further stated that 85 of 134 .school boards had passed resolutions requesting the aid, according to the Virginia School Boards Association.
