First Class And Fearless
“He was first class, all the way,” recalled D. Michael Smithwick a Maryland - based steeplechase trainer who provided Aitcheson with many of his winning mounts. “He was completely fearless, and had an incredible sense of timing ... His record is a tribute to his careful thinking and courageous race riding.”
Aitcheson was honored with the F. Ambrose Clark Award in 1976 for his contributions to the sport. He was inducted into Racing’s Hall of Fame in 1978. And in 1988, he was honored by the Virginia Gold Cup in a special salute, and the new jockey’s changing quarters at Great Meadow racecourse in The Plains were named for him. The Gold Cup moved from Broadview to Great Meadow in 1985.
