From Page 21 calling. He re-enlisted for the Korean War in 19S0. On the USS Oriskany, a CA34 carrier, Aitcheson saw action when she was shelled in 19S2 in the Sea of Japan. “Then 1 spent two years on a cruiser, and got out in 19S4,” he said.
When he returned to Maryland, Aitcheson started out riding for his father again. “We had this nice horse for Alfred Smith Sr. named Grand Chal,” he recalled. “The horse was supposed to be a ‘hunter,’ but he threw everyone that got on him. Well, he threw me, too.” .The Aitchesons found Grand Chal’s calling in racing over jumps, though, and the gelding provided the young rider’s first of eight Virginia Gold Cup victories, winning the 1957 renewal at Broadview.
