The Virginia Gold Cup Races at Great Meadow in The Plains May 4 offer a little something for everyone: for the horseman — top competition, for the railbird — society’s finest, for the thrill-seeker — rapid-fire steeplechasing action, and for the tailgater — alfresco picnic opportunities abound.
This year, even more excitement is being generated by a new Virginia Lottery game from which winning numbers will be selected by the first and second place horses in three races at the Gold Cup. The innovative game is the first of its kind in America using a steeplechase race for results. Tickets for the lottery game are available at all regular lottery outlets and on the Great Meadow course up until 1 p.m. on race day.
This diversity and ability to please the palates of a variety of spectators has kept the 71-yearold Virginia Gold Cup steeplechase races at the top of the thoroughbred game throughout its history.
