The fifth running of the Virginia Gold Cup featured an alltime record of 17 starters at the Broadview Estate in Warrenton, though only five finished.
From the drop of the; starter’s flag, Marylander Howard Bruce’s now legendary Billy Barton showed his heels to the huge field, setting what was then described as a “murderous pace.”
In just the 8-year-old’s third timber start, Billy Barton beat mare Dum Dum into second place. Billy Barton’s second timber start had been just seven days previous, when he won the Maryland Hunt Cup and became the only horse to ever win both races in one year.
Billy missed the 1927 Gold Cup due to a fall in the Hunt Cup the week before, but he then went on to win the Meadowbrook Cup, Pennsylvania and New Jersey Hunt Cups that year. He shipped to Aintree in 1928 and was far in the lead when he fell at the last fence in the Grand National. He was remounted to finish second, better than any American horse until Jay Trump in 1965.
