’Chase and full program of sanctioned steeplechasing over both timber and hurdles offer spectators a clear view of all levels of racing competition.
The trophy which will be presented to the winning owner in the Foxhunfer ’Chase is a bronze sculpture donated by Mellon. It depicts champion and runner-up jockeys Richard Dunwoody and Adrian McGuire in their most heated racecourse battle on the English Turf last year.
James L. Young, master of foxhounds of the local Orange County Hunt in Middleburg, and recent president of the Master of Foxhounds Association, based at Morven Park in Leesburg, will head the foxhunters’ event committee. He will work with Ambassador Charles Whitehouse, MFH, of The Plains, and Gold Cup race director Donald Yovanovich.
The Foxhunter ’Chase at Great Meadow sets out to become as the best known hunter ’chases in England, which is still known as the cradle of modem steeplechasing. The Christies’ Hunter Chase at Cheltenham in February is run for a purse of approximately $23,000, the Martell Hunter Chase at Aintree in Liverpool is run for about $22,000 in April and the Horse and Hound Cup is run at Stratford in June for about
