Library Endures
Graffiti Attack

The county library suffered a graffiti attack some time last Monday.
The graffiti appeared both inside the building, on the screen that separates the children’s room from the meeting room and in the women’s bathroom, and outside on the pillars. The graffiti appeared to have been put on with a black felt tip pen.
At last Thursday’s meeting of the Library Board, librarian David Shaffer said the staff Had managed to clean most of it up. The board agreed to try to quickly paint over the remaining grafiti on the pillars.
Also, he said, Stella Clark, the children’s librarian, will move her desk into the children’s room to help “increase the visibility of the staff.” Mr. Shaffer said he will regularly patrol the outside of the library.
The only clue the staff has is that three teen-aged girls entered the library building on Monday afternoon and all went ir\Jo the women’s bathroom together. Assistant Betty Smith heard giggling, but she said the girls left and did not go into the library rooms.
Chairman Roberta Anderson said, “This offends me deeply.”
Vice chairman Frank Warner agreed saying, “It is usually not people who use the library who do graffiti.”
Following an executive session the board offered Mr. Shaffer a long-term contract with a raise.
Treasurer Helen Platt reported the library’s budget was in good shape at the end of nine months in the fiscal year.
