High school senior Amelia Manson said she had come from a private school in Richmond. “I love Rappahannock,” she said. She said some of her friends hate their private schools. “I don’t see how you can talk about cutting anything.”
Kathryn Treanor said people in Rappahannock support the schools in many ways, with contributions. “The people will support your leadership in passing this budget.”
Rosa Crocker said she was concerned that attention to the budget was causing people to lose sight of a long range vision for education “cultivating excellent conditions for learning.”
When no one else asked to speak, supervisor Chairman. Hubert Gilkey thanked people for coming out.
Hampton District Mike Massie said people letting the supervisors know what they think “helps make our job easier. We have made progress. It’s been a fight every year. I don’t want to see us go back.”
Stonewall-Hawthom District representative Robert Anderson said, “1 thank the people who came out and also the ones who sent letters and phone calls. Someone has put on a good post card campaign.”
Jackson District representative Ron Frazier said he had studied Goals 2000. “I found the works ‘shall’ and ‘must’ 50 times for a volunteer program. It is very bad.”
The Board of Supervisors will pass a school budget at their meeting at 2 p.m., next Monday, May 6.
