This was the first year David has entered the Glenwood Park Show. Overall, he had an outstanding show, which shows how diligently he has worked this winter to feed, train and groom his livestock.
The 4-H Livestock Club participated in the District 4-H Livestock Judging Contest this past Saturday, April 20, at the Rockingham County Fairgrounds near Harrisonburg and received several team and individual awards.
The junior team, for 9 to 13-year olds, consisted of Katie Updike, David Massie and Nathan and Zack Corbin.
Participants judged three classes — beef steers, swine, and sheep — ranking each class. Then participants gave oral reasons to the adult judge explaining why they ranked each class the way they did.
Overall, the Rappahannock junior team placed third, and David was the sixth high individual.
In the sheep class, Nathan was fourth and Zack was tenth.
In the swine class, David placed first, Katie was eighth and the team placed second.
In the beef class David placed first and the team placed second.
Justin Updike participated in the senior division for teens ages 14 to 19.
Members of the livestock club are planning to also participate in the Virginia Beef Expo this week in Harrisonburg and the Shenandoah Valley 4-H and FFA Beef Show on May 4 in Woodstock.
