The Virginia Gold Cup is still accepting entries to its pony races which will be run just prior to the horse racing program at the May 4 Virginia Gold Cup at Great Meadow in The Plains. Trophies are being offered in three size divisions: small, medium and large.
Long a tradition in Virginia, pony racing gives young riders the chance to demonstrate their riding skills before large race crowds, an experience especially important for those youngsters who may be planning to make race riding a career.
Rjders must be properly attired in either racing silks or appropriate hunting attire. A hard hat with chin strap is required, and protective vests strongly recommended.
The races are set at “catch” or non-specified weights, and riders cannot have reached their 18th birthday as of Jan. 1, 1996. Participants must have prior experience with a hunt or Pony Club and have written consent of their parents to compete.
