Mrs. Stuart honored these memories when she donated the eight and , one half acres on Sept. 13, 1983, to the Amissville Ruritan Club for use by the ball teams during ball season. Thus the name Stuart Field. It was her desire that the Ruritan Club and RAA cooperate in seeking the best for the community. She wanted the ball teams to have a permanent home at Stuart Field.
Thanks to the efforts of Jerry Brown and Joanne Himmer, the RAA was incorporated' five years ago. The purpose was to organize, develop and operate a baseball program in affiliation with Babe Ruth League.
Goals were to teach the youth good sportsmanship, honesty, loyalty, courage and reverence so they could develop into feature leaders in the community.
The Rappahannock News published a photo of the first team, the “Early Birds,” on April 22, 1976. It showed John Early as sponsor, team members Mike Early, Mike Paul, Bobby Carter, and Clarence “Boosie” Dodson. Other team members joining in those early days included Ben Atkins, Scott Ziemer, Roger Cordani, and Ron Dodson (Boosie’s brother) who has dedicated most of those years also to baseball.
Ben Atkins is still active in RAA. In addition to being coach, Ben has taken on the responsibility of reporting RAA activities on a weekly basis. You can make his job a little easier by having someone on each team designated to provide him with early and accurate game results.
