The 40-year-old Amissville resident was the first woman in the county to be a patrol officer, the only female deputy in the office for 16 years and now hopes to be Rappahannock’s first female sheriff But she downplayed the attention being paid to her gender.
“I don’t think me being a woman should matter,” she said. “It hasn’t mattered in the cases I’ve been involved in. ... I feel that I am capable of making the right decisions and I’m confident I will make the right decisions as your sheriff"
Smith promised that as sheriff she would surround herself with capable people who are not afraid to speak up and offer their ideas. She also talked about her experience investigating cases and training other deputies. As a matter of fact, she trained Welch during his first night on the job at the RCSO nearly nine years ago.
Welch was a Rappahannock road deputy for four years and has worked in the Culpeper Police Department
