‘Grandpa is going
to play group*
Several years ago my cousin’s four-year old daughter wondered where her grandfather <my uncle Sam), my dad, the two uncles Frank, Uncle Joe and several other retired “grandfathers” went every morning about 8:30 a.m. In a response that made perfect sense to a four-year old, my cousin answered that grandpa was going to “play group ” For several years this much loved group of men gathered daily for coffee at Friendly’s in our small home town of Rome, N.Y., for camaraderie and to discuss the affairs of family and the world. Ever after that famous explanation, within the family, with loving laughter, we said the men were going to “play group ” In Rappahannock we have at least two men’s lunch bunch groups and a breakfast group where camaraderie, political discussions and joke telling flourish 11 won’t call them play groups!)
