with 12 brothers and sisters and serving dinner to forty '40) people every night, Hi Soo acquired cooking skills from a very young age. As a rebellious young woman who resisted the traditional role of a Korean woman, Hi Soo went on to graduate from the English Department of Ewha Women’s University in Seoul, Korea, and is the author of two novels, one of them an award winning novel that was made into a movie. Having attended a summer program at Cordon Bleu Cooking School in Paris, she continued her studies in Seoul and throughout Southeast Asia and is also the author of a cookbook, Growing up in a Korean Kitchen.
Hi Soo married her husband Larry in 1961. His work with the U. of Maryland overseas programs took them to international assignments for 25 years. Ten years ago they finally decided to come home and lived in Silver Spring. Their daughter, editor of All Asia News at Reuters News Agency, wanted a summer home, so the Hepinstall’s purchased their home and moved into Jenkins Hollow just three months ago.
