If takhis capture the spirit of CRC, it’s often the red pandas which capture the hearts of visitors. At first glance, they look like red raccoons, but in the wild they share habitat and habits with giant pandas. The silence and seclusion of CRC is the best place for breeding of the easilydisturbed red pandas. Less than 2,500 remain in China’s bamboo forests, where they evolved large molars and strong chewing muscles to take advantage of abundant but tough bamboo shoots and leaves. CRC and zoo staff members now regularly visit China to work with Chinese experts on conservation of both red and giant pandas.
CRC staff recently were part of a team which determined that clouded leopards - amazing tree-climbing cats from Asia - are actually two different species, with animals from Borneo and Sumatra as genetically different from animals on the Asian mainland as lions are from tigers. CRC and zoo staff also just joined a team of research on an expedition to the Antarctic to study Weddell seals. And the list continues all around the globe, as CRC staff work with their partners in government, universities, and conservation groups to conserve endangered species.
