In response to a question about whether he is mature enough to be sheriff Welch said that is an issue he has faced all his life. He said he attended Radford University and earned a degree in criminal justice to get a leg up on his competition and to someday return to his home county to be sheriff
“I have a young face. I'm 31 years of age and I'm ambitious, yes I am," he said. “I’ve always been a leader. ... Leadership does not have any age barrier. You’re either a leader or you’re not."
