learned more about buying and selling credits and their going prices, I also ran into a friend who had credits to sell. His property had just been placed in easement and he had more credits than he could possibly use in the years he had available to use them. As a result, I purchased tax credits from him and used them to pay our estimated Virginia income taxes.

The benefits of the credits are straightforward. The price of the tax credits is less than the value of the credits (usually at $.70 - $.90 on the dollar). But the seller benefits because he or she would not otherwise be able to use them. And the buyer benefits because he or she can use them to reduce their tax liability
