QUICK ON HIS FEET: Wakefield Country Day School’s Ian McCool is the top runner on the school’s cross country team.

“Basically, what I think about is getting through with it," he said. “I just keep my mind on the goal and I try not to let anyone pass me."

McCool said he joined Wakefield’s cross country team to stay in shape. He also plays soccer on two regional teams, one in Culpeper and one in Richmond. He said practices rarely conflict. More of a concern is whether his body can take it.

“I just basically have to stay healthy,” he said.
