GM reported spending over one billion dollars for the design, production, and publicity of the EV-1 but couldn’t get enough interest in it to keep it in production. When GM began its mandatory call back of the EV-1, most of the people leasing the car (they had not been allowed to buy them) tried to purchase the cars from GM. GM refused.
GM’s refusal raised a red flag for Director Chris Paine and other owners. Paine, thinking there was much more to the story than a lack of interest in the car, began investigating what he felt were the real reasons behind the car’s demise. The film takes on a sense of urgency as the cars begin disappearing. Paine tracks down the lease holders, and through great detective work tracks down the sad truth about the fate of the little EV-1.
