Ian McCool is a competitor, even when he’s running in girls’ shoes.
In his past three meets on Wakefield Country Day School’s varsity cross country team, McCool, of Amissville, has placed in the top five spots. On Thursday, Sept. 27, he crossed the finish line first out of 35 runners, and he was wearing women’s running shoes.
“Once I got to the school, and I just remembered I forgot my shoes,” he said. “I had to run in little-bitty girl shoes.”
A freshman at Wakefield, McCool competes against upper classmen. On Tuesday, Oct. 2, he ran on feet blistered from the shoe mishap against six other schools at Randolph-Macon Academy in Front Royal, Va. He finished fourth with a time of 18 minutes and 58 seconds — fairly close to his personal goal for the season of running the standard 3.1-mile cross country course in at least 18 minutes and 30 seconds.
McCool didn’t start out that fast.
