track. He realizes that his drive, whether it be for soccer or for cross country, is what makes him a great athlete.
“The thing that will make him a good cross country runner is the same thing that made him a good soccer player: it’s his work ethic,” he said.
Wakefield’s cross country program saw a surge in interest this fall. The varsity team has five boys and five girls running this season — a ten-fold increase from last year. In fact, this is the first time since 2003 that Wakefield’s varsity program met the Delaney Athletic Conference’s four-member requirement to qualify as a team, Coach Kenney said.
Wakefield has three more meets this season before the Delaney Athletic Conference championship on Nov. 2. The conference includes top contenders Quantico High School in Quantico, Va., and Fredericksburg Academy in Fredericksburg, Va. At the Delaney Athletic Conference meet on Sept. 18, Wakefield’s men’s team placed fifth out of seven schools, and the women’s team came in third out of four schools.
But most of Wakefield’s runners are underclassmen — four of five boys and five of five girls — and have years ahead of them to get up to speed with the competitive schools in the conference.
