reach of CRC
Visitors can also learn how the CRCTs work does not all happen behind the fence. From nearby Shenandoah National Park to the wild steppes of Asia, CRC staff members work with counterparts in other countries parts to foster the recovery of endangered species — using the principles of conservation biology by taking into account the economic and social forces which caused the imperiled condition to begin with.
If there is one creature which best symbolizes the equine history and current mission of the CRC, it must be the Przewalski’s horse (or takhi as it’s known in Mongolia, which aptly means “spirit’’ - although staff often call them “P-horses” fiv short). Too wild to be domesticated, takhis disappeared from their last stronghold in the wild in the 1960s. Fortunately a few animals were saved in zoos.
