This is the Smithsonian Institution/National Zoological Park’s “Conservation and Research Center”, known to scientists and conservationists from around the world as simply as the “CRC”. They also know the secret of what goes on behind the fence - together with other Conservation and Science staff and facilities located at the National Zoo’s original campus in Rock Creek Park, this is one of the world’s most highly respected institutions for the new field of “conservation biology”.
To protect the endangered animals inside, the CRC is usually closed to the public. This weekend, however, CRC will open its gates for its annual “Autumn Conservation Festival.” This is the one chance eacji yqar , for the public to learn about how conservation biology - a field that didn’t even exist when I was a graduate student, in the 1970s - is being used to ensure the survival of wild PrzewaLski’s horses from Central Asia, blackfooted ferrets from the American prairies, long-legged maned wolves from South America, and a host of other species.
Visitors can also learn how CRC staff use its fields and forests as natural laboratory for study of the ecological relationships of among everything from native oaks and invasive plants to' white-tailed deer and salamanders.
