Last Oct. 7 students from Rappahannock County High School began a project for their Environmental Science Class. Little did they know then that there would be some big winners. The project was for a competition sponsored by WVPT in Harrisonburg and underwritten by Shenandoah Spring Water in Staunton.
The Raindrops and the Environment Contest for the WVPT 1998 Young Environmentalist Award challenged students in grades 9 through 11 who competed as teams and the 12th grade participants who competed individually for a $1,000 reimbursable scholarship.
One team comprised of Adam Updike, Kevin Clark and Rob Wilson addressed the issue of poultry litter being trucked to Rappahannock County from Page County and its effect on stream quality as a result of its being spread on fields here.
The other 9-11 grade team, including Ryland Pace, Emily Sims and Robyn Kaye, focused on the issue of flooding in Rappahannock County. After much research and many interviews they discovered that education of people was more important in protecting property than trying
