According to the American Dietetic Association, the slogan “is a call to action that challenges Americans to take responsibility for their food and nutrition habits.”
Why is the responsibility aspect of the message important? According to American Dietetic Association Nutrition Trends Survey, almost 80 percent of Americans believe that nutrition is import to health, yet only about 40 percent claim that they are doing all they can to eat healthfully.
Again, 81 percent of Americans believe physical activity is as important as healthful eating to overall good health, but only 43 percent claim to make an effort to incorporate physical activity into their lives on any regular basis.
Gaps between what people believe and what they do are no surprise to educators. Consumers see many obstacles to following through on their beliefs in the areas of eating and exercise. Some of the obstacles identified by consumers in research on the “It’s All About You” messages area:
