A poor example of the use of heading cuts is shearing trees under power lines. The resulting growth is excessive, weakly attached, unattractive and soon needs trimming again. This is a case where tree replacement would be desirable.
For many types of trees and shrubs, a combination of thinning and heading cuts can be used to reduce size if necessary, and retain a natural shape.
Pruning larger trees can be difficult for homeowners. Any job that requires working on a ladder or using power tools up in a tree should be left for professionals. However, homeowners can safely remove low branches that are getting in the way.
Larger branches should be removed with a three part cut to prevent tearing of the bark on the trunk when the branch drops. The first cut is made from under the branch, and only goes part way through the branch. The second cut removes the branch, with the first cut preventing any tearing. The
