Most operating budget increases pertain, to employee salaries. The state mandates a 2.25 percent increase for teachers if a county accepts state funds. In addition, Gangel proposes a longevity 1.5 percent step increase and a 1.25 percent phased in increase to help move teachers toward the state average. The five percent combined teacher salary increases make up $183,340, or nearly 66 percent, of the $279,581 Operation Budget.
Other proposed salary increases for administrative personnel are designed to bring employees closer to their established pay schedules. Unlike teachers, who are hired and paid based on their years of experience, administrative employees have historically been hired at whatever rate the budget would accommodate at the time.
