home improvement projects can be completed within one day.

For most of the projects, equipment costs are modest.

Guard those gutters

If your basement has the sogs after our rainy winter, the problem may be no more complex than clogged gutters. To minimize the number of times you climb the ladder to scoop out gutter debris, especially after oak flowers start falling, install gutter guards. Common varieties include curved lengths of metal screening that hinge off the gutter lip and flat sheets of aluminum that fit under the shingles and extend to within an inch or so of the gutter lip.

Upgrade downspouts

Easily attached to the end of downspouts, roughly L-shaped extensions of various lengths will channel gutter water farther from the house and help keep basements dry. If the yard slopes toward the house, the answer may be longer — underground spout extensions, made of inexpensive corrugated polyethylene pipe. Installation is tedious, but simple: dig a shallow ditch, attach the pipe to the downspout, lay the pipe in the ditch, cover with soil, tamp down and reseed.
