The Rappahannock Garden Club, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary in May 1999, likewise is deeply involved in community service, sponsoring and carrying out beautification projects at the county library, the courthouse memorial garden and along Route 231 through the “adopt-a-highway” program.
“We are very fortunate to have an endowment from Mrs. Francis Leonard, who was a club member before she passed away, that allows us to give scholarships each year to local high school seniors, $1,000 for their first year in college and $500 for the second,” explained club president Betty Wood, who points out that the club looks for worthy students, and not necessarily just those who plan to study horticulture.
Wood is also active with the Shenandoah District Garden Club, one of six districts within the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs, which promotes civic activities among member clubs.
