The key to sprucing up your home on a pauper’s budget is to think creatively. We often take the existing surroundings for granted unless we are forced to gain a new perspective on them. Take a good look around. What catches your eye? An old chair needs recovering. The living room curtains have faded and no longer resemble the color they once reflected. The den is dark and colorless. What can we do?
Lighten up
Often old upholstered pieces begin to look outdated and drab when their color fades or a mixture of grape juice and spaghetti stains begins to dominate the fabric color. If your upholstered pieces need to be recovered but you can’t spare the expense of reupholstering, consider slipcovers.
Ready-made slipcovers are available from local retailers and are far less expensive than re-upholstering. Pick heavy fabrics in duck cotton, linen or canvas that are more durable and have them treated for stain resistance.
Pick a neutral color such as offwhite (if the children are grown), tan, putty, or gray. Once you have introduced fresh, neutral slipcovers, you have a clean palette from which to work.
