Rappahannock resident Carla Miller had been working with the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life for two years when she called Esther Settle, local coordinator for the Relay, last year and told her she couldn’t participate in the walk.
“I couldn’t walk because I had cancer,” Miller said. “A lot of the team members on my team were family and so everything kind of fell apart when they found out. Esther came over, held my hand and put me back together. We got it back together for the event.”
But the ordeal for Miller was just beginning.
“I was having a tough time and you put things off, you know? But a friend of mine, Charlotte Tummeyer, made an appointment for me with the doctor to get a pap smear and she arranged one for herself the same day and then came and got me. So I went. That was last February. In two weeks they called me and told me to come back,” she said.
In March Miller went back and they took another pap smear. They said her rating was not good and did another. They found cervical cancer — she had three tumors. A biopsy done at Fauquier Hospital in
