“Everyone focuses on the nectar plants — they’re showy, but you need to look at the larger picture. Caterpillars need leaves to eat so they can grow into butterflies.
“That’s why butterflies are great for kids to learn about. They are a window into nature that can show you how everything is intertwined.”
Species differences aside, there are a few requirements that are a must for any butterfly garden, said Higgins. One is lots of sun. “Butterflies can only fly when their wings are warm enough — between 80 and 100 degrees.”
At Airlie, a low stone wall gives the butterflies a place to warm their wings in the sun. And butterfly-friendly plants need plenty of sun to produce nectar.
Water is also necessary in a butterfly garden. Butterflies like standing water, said Higgins. In order to create still pools of water and a mud flat, the stream running through the Airlie garden was dammed and a bog garden planted. Vegetation included pickerel weed, turtlehead, Joe Pye Weed, lobelia ironweed and buttonbush.
