The young Bottlebrush Buckeye (Aesculus parviflora) planted at Christmas, shade- and moisture-loving, is situated near the stream — directly in the cattle’s path. It is marked by stakes tied with red velvet ribbon, a reminder to mowers and weedeaters.
Seeing the red splashes of ribbon, the romping stops. Mature members of the herd gaze respectfully at the ribhon and lead the others around the entrenchment, moving towards home — my neighbor’s property.
Chagrined to learn from their owner that the great playful Angus is the main bull of the herd, my own red coat has also gone unnoticed.
With the excitement over, the remainder of the day is perfect for obeying the voices in my head. But the list of chores is not daunting because tending Naramata is a labor of love.
