“And my husband Ames has been so supportive and I’m so lucky. He has been wonderful and been there for me. Sometimes he’d tell me ‘everything will be okay, you’ll be alright’ and I’d feel angry.
“Then my father told me ‘remember, everyone around you feels just as bad as you do but they just don’t know what to say,’ and he was right.”
Miller said it helped her children to get through the ordeal because they knew Settle and could see that she was someone who had survived cancer.
“It’s a long process, recovery... and it makes you so appreciative of every day and everything around you,” she said.
Miller now works diligently with Settle for the ACS and reportedly has the largest team going for this year’s Relay for Life which is set for May 29 and 30 at Airlie in Warrenton. Those interested in participating or joining a team should call Settle at 675-3252.
“I’m trying to give back what Esther has given me to everyone,” Miller said. “That’s the way it works, that’s what she taught me, pass it on.”
